Tech meets Passion: Janine and Markus explain what makes us who we are and how Shopmacher has evolved.
At SHOPMACHER we build digital commerce solutions for brands like Borussia Dortmund, JobRad Loop and gamescom, and we do it with attitude, reliability and genuine joy in working together. With around 80 colleagues in Germany and Vietnam, we create commerce platforms that convince on the technical side and grow over the long term.
What sets us apart?
We are not the classic agency. We support our clients long-term, keep developing together and celebrate successes as a team, and that over many years:
In this episode, Janine and Markus introduce Shopmacher: we are an e-commerce agency with around 75 employees, about 55 of them in Germany and 20 in Vietnam. We build custom e-commerce platforms and digital solutions for well-known clients like Borussia Dortmund, JobRad Loop and gamescom. The focus is not only on shop systems, but increasingly on custom development and data-driven platform solutions.
How we work and our projects:
We work with clients long-term, not on the classic agency principle of "project done, client gone".
After setups, things move into monthly retainers, in which clients are continuously developed further.
Agile methods (Scrum-inspired) ensure tight feedback cycles.
Teams consist of about 10 people with project management, development and team coaches.
Employees can actively contribute ideas and advise clients, not just "work through" tasks.
Our company culture and values:
The following company values have crystallized out of the team:
Pragmatism - getting things done instead of clinging to perfection.
Originality - appreciating and living what makes us special.
Goodwill - a people-oriented perspective, trust.
Truthfulness - being authentic, not just appearing that way.
At the center is the "we feeling" as a shared compass.
In addition:
Close collaboration with Vietnam; the company language is English.
Regular catch-ups for personal development (not professional).
Barcamps, open formats for learning and exchange, academy-internal learning.
Breakfast and lunch together in the office, deliberately without work topics.
How we live remote culture:
Generally flexible, depending on the role.
Project management and development can also work fully remotely.
Team coaches and people-facing roles are more strongly anchored in the office.
Many employees like coming into the office because of the good atmosphere.
How does onboarding and getting started work?
An individual onboarding plan for every role.
Shared content like the SHOPMACHER Story or the "Vietnam basics".
A trial day is central to getting to know each other on both sides.
Principle: hire for attitude, train for skill.
Why SHOPMACHER? When is it a good fit?
Good reasons to apply:
A passion for modern technologies and demanding projects.
A desire to help shape things and short decision paths.
Joy in long-term client support.
Identification with the values and a very human culture.
When it is rather not a fit:
If you need rigid hierarchies and clear top-down instructions.
If you want to do the bare minimum by the book.
If you don't want any responsibility or creative freedom.

The Guesswork Trap: Why digital projects fail before they begin
Most digital projects fail not because of the chosen technology, but because of a dangerous mix of unclear starting points, vague requirements and unclear responsibilities.
