Apprenticeship and studies at Shopmacher: an interview with Katharina and Fynn

Ausbildung und Studium bei SHOPMACHER: Interview mit Katharina und Fynn

Who are the people behind Shopmacher? And what does working in e-commerce actually involve? This time, Fynn and Katharina give us an insight into their apprenticeship and their dual studies. Read here what they told the students at the Hans-Böckler-Berufskolleg in Münster about their career paths.

What were your reasons for starting an apprenticeship or studies at Shopmacher?

Fynn: I finished my comprehensive school degree in 2021 and then spent two years completing my technical high school diploma in electrical engineering, information and communication technology. I have always enjoyed working at the computer and been interested in IT. An internship at Shopmacher then showed me that training as an IT specialist in application development is exactly right for me.

Katharina: I finished my Abitur in 2024 with advanced courses in math and computer science. I wanted to start a degree that had a practical connection and would prepare me for the digital world. The dual study program Bachelor of Arts E-Commerce at Shopmacher was the perfect choice for that. I especially liked that here too I was able to do an internship beforehand to get to know the company.
Besides choosing the industry and the profession, it was especially important to me to find a company that meets me as an equal and where I am not simply "the trainee". That is exactly what I found at Shopmacher. Here you are given trust and responsibility, and my opinion is taken seriously. That creates not only motivation, but also a real sense of belonging.

What is the content of your apprenticeship or studies at Shopmacher?

Fynn: In my apprenticeship I learn everything about the development and implementation of software. I work with various programming languages and tools and contribute to real projects. I also learn how to analyze technical problems and develop solutions.

Katharina: My studies are very varied. I learn the fundamentals of e-commerce, such as online marketing, web shop management and logistics. At the same time, I also have a lot to do with the technical side and learn how shop systems work and how they can be optimized.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship or studies?

Fynn: What I enjoy most is that I learn something new every day and can contribute to exciting projects right away. It is great to see how your own ideas get implemented and how you can contribute to a project's success. The colleagues are also super helpful and support me when I have questions.

Katharina: I think it is great that my studies are so hands-on. I can apply what I learn directly in the company and see what the theory looks like in reality. I also like the mix of university and work. I learn the theoretical fundamentals on the one hand and can then deepen them directly at Shopmacher.
What I particularly value about my time at Shopmacher is not only the professional support, but also the human guidance. The team meets me as an equal, takes time for questions and supports not just my professional but also my personal growth. It creates a working atmosphere in which you feel comfortable, are taken seriously and can continuously develop. Both professionally and as a person.

What tips do you have for students interested in an apprenticeship or studies in e-commerce?

Fynn: Definitely do internships! That is the best way to get to know different professions and companies. And do not be afraid to ask questions. At Shopmacher you always get an answer and are welcomed well.

Katharina: Inform yourself early about the different options and choose a field that really interests you. Be open to new things and use the time available to you to prepare as well as possible. The world of work is diverse, and e-commerce in particular is an exciting, future-proof field with many development opportunities and countless facets.
If you are interested in Shopmacher: apply! It really is worth it.
