Algolia is a technology partner that offers a modern search engine and recommendation system as a SaaS solution. The California-based company has effectively used artificial intelligence and machine learning to create a solution that combines Search and personalization to deliver especially relevant results, and it has demonstrably improved the conversion of e-commerce platforms. This technical foundation from Algolia means that search results continuously improve themselves. That is the clever part.
How long have we been an Algolia partner?
We have been an Algolia partner since 2020. We first implemented Algolia as part of the technical architecture of the best-of-breed solution we assembled and built for our client Sport 2000. Since then, the system has been a fixed part of our toolkit.
Why did we choose Algolia as a partner?
Like many of our key technology partners, Algolia is a member of the MACH Alliance (Microservices, API-driven, Cloud, Headless), which puts it in step with us and fully in tune with the times when it comes to architectural philosophy.
In recent months we have seen a trend toward specialization of the various components we use in a commerce stack. Increasingly, complex requirements from shop operators can no longer be met best by a monolithic commerce suite that then brings along an integrated search solution, for example. Often it makes more sense, with an eye on flexibility and possible future requirements, to combine specialized but independent services into a single, unified solution.
Algolia's solution is an ideal building block for this approach. As a SaaS solution, it can be integrated into practically any architecture via API, which makes it a great fit for the best-of-breed approach.
What do we especially value about Algolia?
What really stands out: Algolia is just incredibly fast. That comes from its comprehensive query capabilities, which we use not only for Search but also for product, brand and blog listings, for example.
From a technical perspective, Algolia is especially flexible thanks to its API approach, and the system keeps learning through machine learning and artificial intelligence, permanently improving itself. And here too, the benefit of AI is not limited to Search: we can use it to optimize recommendations and product rankings.
From the customer's point of view, Algolia delivers results that are genuinely personalized. It does not simply match hits for a search term in a database; it factors information about the searcher into how the search results are delivered.
And not only that: with Algolia, merchants can also strategically optimize how search results are delivered and refine facets and filters themselves, or sort options. Merchants can also use additional factors such as contribution margin or the remaining stock of each product to optimize the ranking.
This is our experience with Algolia:
We currently use Algolia with our client ANWR across the Sport2000 and schuhe.de platforms. And with our client Hirmer Eckerle we also implemented Algolia as part of a comprehensive move toward greater flexibility: eckerle.de has been using Algolia search since November 2022. In total, from 2020 to today, we have implemented 3 complex best-of-breed e-commerce architectures in which we used Algolia as the solution, and three more are currently being built.
By now we have repeatedly connected Algolia to commercetools. To make this run as smoothly as possible according to our own expectations and those of our clients, and to keep product data flowing cleanly through the systems, we now have our own connector for syncing product data, brand content and blog posts.

In our view, Algolia has struck a good balance between customer-friendly stability and reliability on the one hand and the urgent need to continually reinvent and evolve in line with market demands and technological innovation on the other.
In fall 2022, Algolia secured additional specialist expertise through the acquisition of search.io and cemented its leading position in the market. We are convinced that we have a very reliable technology partner in our portfolio here, one with which we will create first-class commerce solutions for the long term.
