SHOP-TECH DECISION TREE

It’s a vexed subject – and not a simple question that can be answered unequivocally:
Which is the best store system for my specific needs? Should we go for an integrated commerce suite? Or better SaaS? Or do we need to develop individually? And what else is there to consider?

On K5 TV, SHOPMACHER CTO Manuel Ludvigsen-Diekmann discussed this topic at length with retail expert Stefan Wenzel – and worked his way up to the fundamental questions of trend-setting technology decisions.

Together, the two arrived at 4 key parameters that should be at the beginning of any technology decision:

1. trading model

How does my trading model differ from the competition?

2. independence

How important is it to remain independent of external partners?

3. IT infrastructure

Do I want and can I develop an IT infrastructure myself or do I have to / want to delegate the responsibility to external partners?

4. offer

Is my product/service unique or is it the sales process (particularly fast, reliable, etc.)?

Decision tree

A number of decisions must then be made on this basis. The correct sequence is important here. An initial overview of this is provided by the Shop-Tech decision tree, which we use as part of our architecture consulting and which Manuel worked out for the Talk format.

What Stefan and Manuel discussed in the context of this episode, among other things:

"The same applies to software:
If you don't define the destination, you can't arrive."

"Converting a standard solution to more than 20 percent cannot be the way to go."

"Technology is a means to an end. The less complexity the better."

"What is my USP and what can the team and the organization deliver? Honest self-reflection helps to make the right decisions."
