Plug & Pay: New Standard Connector for Mollie Makes Payments in commercetools Shops Seamless and Flexible

As experts in commerce technology landscapes and Composable Commerce, we know how important smoothly functioning interfaces between different software solutions are. Until now, we built individual interfaces for each customer to assemble their ideal technology stack. Now, for the first time, we’re taking a different approach. Together with the European Financial Service Provider (PSP) Mollie, we’ve developed a standard interface that allows the payment service to be integrated easily and seamlessly into commercetools shops. The plugin, certified by commercetools, is now available to all merchants on the commercetools marketplace.

Various commercetools Projects paved the way

But how does an e-commerce agency become a developer of standard software? Already in previous customer projects, including for the online bicycle retailer bravobike, we realized: The previous connector between Mollie and commercetools had potential for optimization. In order to make the connection even smoother, we developed individual solutions to Mollie for these shops in the past.

In discussions with Mollie the idea then matured to replace the previous connector in the commercetools marketplace with a new standard connector developed by us. The project was divided into two parts: On the one hand, we developed the connector certified by commercetools, which enables seamless integration of Mollie’s payment services into commercetools. On the other hand, we implemented a custom application with which merchants can configure and manage their payment methods themselves – completely without developer know-how. In concrete terms, this means that merchants can rename payment methods, change their order or provide them with their own descriptions. The definition of transaction limits, the definition of which customers should be shown which payment methods, as well as the management of additional costs and fees are possible via the intuitive interface.

Demo Store + Pilot Customer = A Dream Team for Highest Reliability

Mollie not only supported the idea. The FSP also brought a pilot customer into the project: The Dutch online fashion retailer Otrium should be the first to use the new standard connector from Shopmacher.

In order to guarantee the highest quality and reliability – after all, payment processes are among the most sensitive areas in e-commerce – we relied on a systematic development approach. A specially set up demo store enabled us to continuously and automatically test the stability of the connector. The input from Otrium and our contacts at Mollie were also helpful in continuously improving the connector under real conditions.

In the meantime, the Mollie Connector has been released by commercetools for the marketplace. For us, this is a big step because the successful development and certification underlines our expertise in the field of commercetools and strengthens our position in the growing market for Composable Commerce.

Next Steps: More Payment Methods, More Features, More Connectors

In close coordination with Mollie, we are already planning the next steps: Among other things, further payment options are to be integrated. In addition, we want to continuously expand the functionality of the custom application – based on user feedback and changing market requirements.

Our goal at Shopmacher will continue to be to make the integration of best-of-breed solutions in e-commerce as easy as possible and to give merchants the freedom to choose their ideal setup. With the Mollie Connector, we have taken an important step. Now we look forward to using this expertise in the future to create innovative solutions for e-commerce.
